3 Introduction  Is there a population of Barred Owls at Boar’s Hog Gap?  Barred owls are a generalist species that are very adaptable hunters (Levy 1999).  Barred owls traditional range is forests east of the Great Plains and prefer pole-sized timber 30 – 40 years after a clear cut (Levy 1999).  Boar’s Hog gap is a popular hiking spot in the Bowater Pocket Wilderness.  The Area is owned by the Bowater paper company and is often cut for timber, creating area suitable for Barred Owls.  The owls will be tempted to call in response to a taped Barred Owl or a Barred Owl call.

4 Methods and Materials Owl call Call the owls early in the evening or early in the morning. Use data forms to document where the owls where heard and how many where heard. Have several trips to specified locations enabling consistent data.

5 Expected Results and Benefits  Gain knowledge of population of Barred Owls in the Bowater Pocket Wilderness area.  Advantages  Determine predator/prey relationships in the area  Determine how these owls live in the area
