Whole number Numerator Denominator Mixed Number A fraction is a number that represents an equal part of a whole. A mixed number is a number that names a whole and a fraction.

Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only. Concept Development Ordering Fractions and Mixed Numbers on a Number Line A number line is used to represent and order numbers. Whole numbers are represented by the large tick marks. Positive numbers are numbers greater than zero. Negative numbers are numbers less than zero. Fractions are represented by the small tick marks between the whole numbers. The denominator represents the total number of equal parts. The numerator represents the selected number of equal parts.
