Galapagos Islands Answer the following questions after watching the video. – Why do you think the Galapagos Islands were a valuable place for Darwin to do his research? – What important theory did Darwin propose after his visit to the Galapagos? Galapagos Islands Reminders: I will not be here the last two day of the six weeks. Please come see me before then if you need to retake or makeup an assignment.
2
Mechanisms of Evolution Explain the mechanism and how it leads to evolution. Give an example of the mechanism as it has occurred or is occurring in a particular species in a specific location. Draw a graphic representation of the mechanism. Natural selection breezy, esme, alia Genetic drift Miriah, Elpidio Gene flow Valentin, Tania Geographic isolation Jorge, Johnny Reproductive isolation Megan, Noah Sexual Selection- alejandro, ira, edith Artificial Selection- Caleb, Mac, Aaron
3
Sympatric Speciation A speciation in which new species evolve from a single ancestral species while inhabiting the same geographic region. Example: Orca in the northeast Pacific. These two groups of Orca occur in the same habitat but are avoiding each other and they do not interbreed. They have different diets, vocal behavior, and social structures.
4
Allopatric Speciation A speciation in which different groups of the same population of a species become physically isolated from one another for a long period of time, resulting in the development of a new species (Geographic Speciation). Example: Charles Darwin's Galápagos Finches, another one involves the Asian Elephant.

Allopatric Speciation 1.How does this video demonstrate allopatric speciation? 2.What adaptations do the inland populations of salamanders have? How do those adaptations increase their fitness? What about the coastal population? 3.What happened when the two population merged? Explain As you watch the video, answer the following questions:video

Types of Natural Selection
8
What type of natural selection is occurring in the video? How do you know? As the environment changed what happened to the population of rock pocket mice? How did that adaptation increase their fitness? http://media.hhmi.org/fittest/natural_selectio n.html http://media.hhmi.org/fittest/natural_selectio n.html

Scenarios You and your shoulder partner will create three different scenarios, one for each type of natural selection. For each scenario you must have the following: – A clear description of what is going on in the environment. – Graph of before and after (can be on the same graph).
