Definition Form of computer data storage The computer’s short term memory (Disk space is long term) Computer chips that temporarily store data to enhance computer performance Uses integrated circuits that allow data to be accessed in any “random” order Doesn’t matter where data is if its related or not

Volatile Memory Loses contents once power is cut. Form of electricity while computer is on Pulls out what it needs at the moment from long term memory Can be saved when computer is shut down properly. When computer boots up, RAM fills with programs automatically loaded at start-up

Different Types Architecture and speed Much faster but more expensive than permanent memory Must be compatible with motherboard Newer - Dynamic RAM Older – Single In-line Memory Modules (SIMMS) or Dual In- Line Memory Modules (DIMMS)
