1.Franks were a Germanic group of people. Their settlement later developed into modern France and Germany. 2. lived along Rhine River

3. Successful in governing because: felt secure b/c area governed close to homeland focused on settling and became farmers Franks united under Clovis to become one large group

4.Clovis became king cruel & greedy, but good general and king 5. Clovis not happy w/Frankish gods and said if he won the next battle, he would immediately convert

(a) won; he and 3,000 Frankish soldiers immediately converted (b) all Franks followed his example (c) first Germanic king to accept Catholic religion

6. he gained support of the Romans in his kingdom 7. the Franks began speaking a form of Latin (which developed into modern French).

9. the Pope and church supported Clovis and helped serve in his government; Clovis protected the church against non- believers (symbiotic relationship)
