About the Biotech Industry A North Carolina Biotechnology Center survey shows that 70% of biomanufacturing workers are trained at the Community College level. There are about 150 biotechnology companies in North Carolina employing 18,500 people. The revenue from these companies is $3 billion, nearly a tenth of the biotechnology industry revenue for the entire United States. Biotechnology is a fast growing field. North Carolina is expected to have 40,000 new biotechnology-related jobs by 2013 and 125,000 by 2023. North Carolina is the third largest biotechnology state in the country (Ernst and Young, 2004) and the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area is the third largest biotech metro region (Milken Biotech Index, 2004)
