Qualitative vs Quantitative
Spiral or notebook paper
2
Quantitative vs Qualitative
Not all data is the same. Data can be quantitative or qualitative. QuaNtitative data is Numerical. QuaLitative is using Language (non-numerical)
3
Examples… Quantitative: Qualitative: Shoe Size Your Age
Favorite brand of jeans Favorite Holiday
4
Quan vs Qual Brand of sneaker worn by athletes Height of athletes
Low temperatures in different cities The day of the week people were born Amount of time spent sleeping per day Student’s gender
5

6
Discrete or Continuous
Data can also be classified as discrete or continuous. If there are gaps in the possible values, it is discrete. If there are no gaps in possible values, it is continuous. (over a range of time)
7
Example… Discrete: Continuous: Number of people in line at a store.
Person’s height over a five-year period.
8
Discrete vs. Continuous
Length of a caterpillar over a five-day period Number of people that voted for a certain candidate Number of animals in a pet shelter Temperature through the day Weight of an elephant over a two-year period Number of fish in a pond
9
