What not to do The European Commission is currently considering the comments submitted by stakeholders following the closure of the consultation round on the protection of animals during transport. The Commission is also expecting to draft a new proposal on technical specifications for a central satellite navigation system. Meanwhile, Eurogroup has met with the Dutch and Swedish agricultural ministries to discuss the future steps in relation to live transport. Eurogroup has also learnt that the Czech presidency does not currently have any plans to continue the work on the transport proposal. Eurogroup recently complained to DG Health and Consumers (SANCO) about the lack of attention given to the topic of animal welfare at its up-and-coming conferences. DG SANCO is organising one event on Delivering for Tomorrows Consumers on 29-30 October and another on 13- 14 November on global risk assessment, yet neither conferences are scheduled to tackle animal welfare concerns. The first event will look at the future challenges of the (next) Commission and Eurogroup feels that animal welfare should have a place in this discussion. The risk assessment conference has also overlooked animal welfare aspects by failing to acknowledge that risk assessments often entail animal testing. Excluding animal welfare is therefore a clear oversight. Eurogroup has subsequently asked DG SANCO to make good on the promises made in the Animal Welfare Action Plan.
