CITIZENS SERVING COMMUNITIES 101 Critical Days of Summer u Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend u “Critical” because many lose their lives u More activities mean more risk u More risk means more injuries u Safety = Planning with knowledge of the past and making choices that prevent mishaps u Some risk is necessary for a meaningful life u Must weigh benefits and costs of each risk

CITIZENS SERVING COMMUNITIES Vehicle Safety u As a result of 6,000,000 car accidents in the US each year u 3,000,000 will be injured u 42,000 will be killed u The leading cause of fatal mishaps during this period u Contributing factors include: Fatigue, alcohol, drugs, speeding & not using seatbelts u Survival plan: u Insist on seat belt use u Don’t drive impaired u Plan your trip u Inspect your vehicle u Don’t speed (or go too slow) u Don’t tailgate

CITIZENS SERVING COMMUNITIES Water Safety u Each year in the US, u 3,500 drown u 4,500 injured while boating u 700 killed while boating u PFDs could reduce fatalities 90% u Contributing factors include: alcohol, lack of PFDs, horseplay, and underwater obstructions u Survival plan: u Use a “designated Captain” u Don’t overload the boat u PFDs on weak swimmers u Explore water/feet first u Keep throwable PFD nearby u Use the engine kill switch
