What is e-learning? I know e-learning! We learn together in net, speak with each others. No, I don't agree. You need face-to-face contacts to get confidence. I see, in the net, self-regulated students learning by themselves.

Eija Kalliala, Helia9 Student experiences ● Learning in the Internet demands more – but also gives more than traditional learning. ● Clear schedule and outlined material is essential. ● Students have to create their own schedule and find the time for e-learning. ● Personal feedback is excellent. ● Students expect teachers to be active. ● E-learning is suitable for the students’ current way of life (work, small children, work aboard). ● Groupwork keeps students involved in e-learning.

Some research results ● IT-students (n=104) in Finnish Polytechnics during 2001-2002 ● Research questions ● What kind of e-learning qualifications IT-students in Finnish polytechnics have? ● What are the reasons an IT-student gives when he or she interrupts his or her e-course? ● What kind of qualities should a good e-teacher, e- learner and e-course have according to e-student opinions?

Meaningful learning ● Learning is more meaningful when students are – older – full-time working. ● E-learning demands and improves meaningful learning. ● Qualifications of meaningful learning: – Active, Constructive, Collaborative, Intentional, Contextualized, Reflective, Transferable, Self- regulated (modified from Jonassen's theory)
