“Grow Up in Your Salvation” 1 Peter 1:17-2:3 October 18, 2009

I. We are to live reverently (17-21) Since we call on a Father who judges impartially (17).

Romans 2:11 KJV, “For there is no respect of persons with God.” NIV, “For God does not show favoritism.”

I. We are to live reverently (17-21) Since we call on a Father who judges impartially (17). – We have a wholesome respect for God. – This is the basis for godly living.

I. We are to live reverently (17-21) We are redeemed with the precious blood of Christ (19).

Redemption Being freed or delivered by another from difficulty, danger or bondage, usually by the payment of a ransom price.

I. We are to live reverently (17-21) We are redeemed with the precious blood of Christ (19). – He was chosen before the creation of the world (20). – Through Him we believe in God (21). God raised Him from the dead and glorified Him. Therefore, our faith and hope are in God.

II. We are to love deeply (22-25). Now that we have purified ourselves by obeying the truth (22).

Matthew 22:37-39 “Jesus replied, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

II. We are to love deeply (22-25). Now that we have purified ourselves by obeying the truth (22). – We have a sincere love for our brothers.

Romans 12:9-11 “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.”

II. We are to love deeply (22-25). Now that we have purified ourselves by obeying the truth (22). – We have a sincere love for our brothers. – We love from the heart.

II. We are to love deeply (22-25). We are born again through the word of God (23). – It was not through a perishable seed. v. 24, “All men are like grass, and their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall…” – It is through the word that was preached to us (25).

Isaiah 55:11 “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”

III. We are to desire spiritual food eagerly (2:1-3). Therefore we rid ourselves of detrimental attitudes.

Malice – overgrown anger causing desire for misfortune. Deceit – flattery, falsehood or delusion to cause damage to another. Hyprocrisy – counterfeit piety or friendship Envy – grieving at the good of another Slander – speaking against another

III. We are to desire spiritual food eagerly (2:1-3). Therefore we rid ourselves of detrimental attitudes. – These are in contrast to obeying the truth. – These are not consistent with a love for others.

III. We are to desire spiritual food eagerly (2:1-3). We are like newborn babies. – We should crave pure spiritual milk. – By which we grow up in our salvation.

Next Steps Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There is no way to circumvent spiritual disciplines – Spend daily time in prayer – Spend daily time reading the Bible
