Your pre-requirements should be dated. If they are not initialed, if I am satisfied that were done, I will initial them. Make sure you have everything filled out so all I have to do is sign the card.

What is “Citizenship”? The Quality of an Individual’s response to membership in a community Get their ideas from group discussion. Then show definition and clipart.

What is “Community”? People with a common interest living in a particular area. Same here. Group discuss what a community is before continuing.

1. Describe your community to your counselor giving:
Cultures and ethnic groups Short history Major places of employment. What is the future of your community? Review requirements 1 thru 10. Discuss what they should have already done.

2. Mark or point out on a map of your community the following:
Chief government buildings. Main highways to neighboring cities and towns. Fire station, police station,and hospital nearest your home. Nearest railroads and bus stations and airport, if any. Schools, churches, and synagogues near your home. Chief industries or other major places of employment They should all have their maps available to show me. Historical and other interesting points.

Show the top offices and tell which are elected or appointed. They should all have a chart of their local or our state government.

#5. After visiting the governmental meeting, obtain a copy of that body's published budget. Review the major sources of income and expenses for its operation with your counselor. They must have this.

7. Select a city, county, or school problem or issue under consideration from the local newspaper or news broadcast and write a letter expressing your views to the mayor, administrator, or school board president. Show this letter and any response to your counselor. The requirements do not tell the scouts that they have to send it. Most do, some do not. I tell them to send it for funsies and call me if they get a response.

If you gave more of the money to Community Policing and less to the social service agencies, this would be a better city. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. This is the letter I wrote. This is me writing it.

MOST COMMUNITIES HAVE 911 STAY CALM SPEAK CLEARLY DON’T HANG UP TIL TOLD TO GIVE AS MUCH INFO AS YOU HAVE Aside from the obvious of dialing 911, discuss the bullet points.

Now the important parts---do they “get it”?

It is ACTION or DEEDS! It is knowledge about where you live.
It is participation in your city or town’s government. It is caring about the future of where you live. Review “citizenship” concept.
