3 COLUMBUS BOARD of EDUCATION PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE Board Policy Governance Policy -06 Purpose/Charge: 1)To serve as the steering committee to develop a strategic plan with internal and external groups; 2)To research and recommend processes, times, topics, questions to be posed and a consistent message to initiate linkages; 3)To establish and recommend a budget for the Board to conduct linkages; and 4)To assume responsibility for linkage debriefing and presentation to the Board.

4 COLUMBUS BOARD of EDUCATION PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE What does public engagement mean? Creating Opportunities for Conversation, Discussion and Discourse Developing Linkage and Referral Systems Among the District, Schools and the Community

5 COLUMBUS BOARD of EDUCATION PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE 2010-2011 Goals: To identify key school and community communicators To devise a strategic plan to increase parent and community involvement To establish a consistent message to impact student achievement To communicate with parents To support the district’s vision of “100% Student success”

6 Assessment of District Needs: Expand the district’s marketing campaign Increase district visibility in the community Communicate the purpose of the new student assignment plan into Feeder Patterns and Clusters Communicate the importance of school transitions and orientations COLUMBUS BOARD of EDUCATION PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE

7 Accomplishments: Expansion of the “Come See Us” Campaign Marketing Columbus City Schools at Community Events Partnership with the PTA Council to Increase Communication Revision of the CCS Online Family Survey Initiation of the Regional National Children’s Day Events in April 2011 Creation of the Columbus City Schools Ambassador Program

8 COLUMBUS CITY SCHOOLS PARTNERSHIP COMMITTEE School Partnerships: Cooperative, ongoing, and dynamic relationship Mutually beneficial for the school, the students and the partner

9 COLUMBUS CITY SCHOOLS PARTNERSHIP COMMITTEE School Partnership Registration Process: The School Partnership Registration Process is designed to provide Columbus City Schools faculty and staff with up-to-date information about programs and services available to the district through community agencies and businesses.

10 COLUMBUS CITY SCHOOLS PARTNERSHIP COMMITTEE School Partnerships Registration Process: Single point of entry into Columbus City Schools Method to link and to match partners’ community services and programs with the needs of schools Process to track data and evaluate outcomes Mechanism to develop relationships with those who offer resources connected to school’s All School Improvement Plan System to identify and equitably distribute available community services and programs

11 COLUMBUS CITY SCHOOLS PARENT/FAMILY ENGAGEMENT Parent/Family Engagement: Parent involvement is the participation of parents in regular, two- way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities that include insuring: –Parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning –Parents are encouraged to be involved actively in their child’s learning at school and home –Parents are full partners in their child’s education, are included in the decision making, and participate on advisory committees

12 COLUMBUS CITY SCHOOLS PARENT/FAMILY ENGAGEMENT Based on the Seven Standards of Parent Engagement: Communication Parenting Volunteering Assist with Learning Decision Making Community Support Diversity

13 COLUMBUS CITY SCHOOLS PARENT/FAMILY ENGAGEMENT Parent Consultants: Serve as liaisons between the parent, school and community Selected by the building administrator Work collaboratively with other parents, the building administrator, counselor, and other staff Develop a Parent Action Plan Participate as an equal member on school decision making teams
