Solar Home Lighting system
2
DESCRIPTION A distributed energy access model High efficiency electronics Can be assembled and customized by both large and small local entrepreneurs Utilization of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules to provide electricity for lighting, water pumping, communications, computing, entertainment, and small business appliances Can be used for domestic and industrial purpose but Solar Home Lighting system is a fixed installation designed for domestic application
3
The system comprises of Solar PV Module (Solar Cells), charge controller, battery and lighting system (lamps & fans) The solar module is installed in the open on roof/terrace - exposed to sunlight and the charge controller and battery are kept inside a protected place in the house This solar module requires periodic dusting These systems come in different models of varying capacities and specifications and features
4
COMPONENTS PV module (photovoltaic module) or Solar cells Battery Charge controller Bulbs Fans
5
Working principle PV technologies use both direct and scattered sunlight to create electricity connect them to an electric distribution system, or they can stand alone Generally a lead-acid battery, or alternatively a Ni-HM battery, a Ni-Cd battery or a lithium battery are used to store the electric energy The DC energy generated by the solar power generation system will have to be converted into AC energy. That is why a DC-AC inverter is needed
7
USES These systems are useful in non-electrified rural areas and as reliable emergency lighting system for important domestic, commercial and industrial applications Used as lightening system Also used for cooking purpose For running fans
8
Pros and Cons PROS Renewable Energy storage methods Robust Easily installed and moved Solar lights provide a gentle light Easy Installation and Repair Saves 90% of electricity
9
CONS Affected by weather conditions Color of solar light can be too blue, which does not compliment the landscape Some less expensive units can be flimsy Solar lights may have a shorter life span than higher quality Elbow Grease Required Cannot be used for heavy load
