1 Date Assigned APW1 Homework Assignment—Chapter 1 DAY 1 Print out: (a) Chapter 1 HW assignment + put in your note book, (b) print out Ms. O’Rourke’s grading codes + put in your notebook, (c) have your parents sign your contract + put in your notebook, (d) name tags—print your first name and first initial to last name on the name tag handouts you received in class; be certain to use a “sharpe” or dark magic marker; students must put their name tags on their desks at the start of every lesson. Organize your notebooks: (a) have a folder to put your completed homework assignments in and another one to put handouts and printouts (these are the reading assignments that you will need to print out at home) in, (b) create an APWI class notes section for your DAILY class notes. 9-10-15 Big Picture due 9- 16-15 Read Chapter 1. Answer on pp. 32 + 33 Big Picture Questions. YOU MUST SUBMIT THIS ASSIGNMENT TO TURNITIN.COM. We will review how to use this site this week. The last few slides in this file explain how ALL homework assignments are to be written. Please read it and follow the format. You must also print out a copy of your assignment and keep it in your homework folder. Students should always carry their homework with them because you will need this work for in-class team assignments. Students should also keep duplicates of completed homework assignments at home. You can either scan your work or save it on a computer disc. You are responsible for your work. If work “goes missing”, you will need a back up. No credit is given for work that has gone missing so you must protect your work by keeping a spare copy at home. TURNITIN.COM—You can find information about this on the bottom of my Bronx Science page. 9-18-15 and due 9-28-15 TEAM WORK: In-class team work assignment will be discussed in class. Much of it will be completed in class. The final copy to be handed in to the teacher is due on 9-25-2015. Below is a brief outline of the assignment: Teams are to complete: TEAMS PROVIDE SHORT ANSWER/PAPER— (A) Select a region of the world that your team would best like to live as a Paleolithic society. Explain why. (B) Decide what items your society would absolutely need for survival. Explain your reasoning. (C) Would you like living in a Paleolithic society? Explain your reasoning. NOTE: short answers should be no more than 1 paragraph per question: TEAM MIGRATION MAP POSTER—  Draw a human migration map. Show lines of human migration from Africa. Include land-bridges.  Draw the region that your team has selected to live. You can put this on the lower corner (left or right) of the poster map. (Remember to refer to the homework format which is on the last few slides in this homework file.) YOU MUST SUBMIT THIS ASSIGNMENT TO TURNITIN.COM Second Thoughts questions must be submitted to TURNIT IN by 9-20-15 and be in your homework folder in class on 9-21-15. Students should always carry their homework with them. Remember keep duplicates of completed homework assignments at home. 9-21-15 DUE 9-24-15 Read documents 1.1 and 1.2. (pp. 34-41). HW answers should include the following: Read and outline each document introduction/preface. Then answer the questions that you have been assigned to answer. ASSIGNMENT: Document 1.1. Read and outline the introduction (Doc. 1.1’s preface or introduction is on page 34). Read Document 1.1 (pp35-39), answer questions 1-4 (these are red bulleted and are on p. 35) Document 1.2. Read and outline the preface. Doc. 1.2’s preface is on page 39. (b) Read the document 2.2 (pp 40-41), answer questions 1-3 (these are red bulleted and are on p. 39) TEST CHAPTER 1 Since the department only permits Social Studies tests to be on a Wednesday, your Chapter 1 test will be on 9-30- 2015. Thus, while we have completed work on Chapter 1, we won’t be able to take the test for 1 week. Nonetheless, you are to begin Chapter 2 homework on 9-25-2015. Please go to your Chapter 2 homework PPT file which is on my Bronx Science page. Print it. Put it in your notebook and begin Chapter 2 assignments. If revisions have been made (i.e., dates have been extended or parts have been amended) just write the changes on the assignment sheets that you originally printed out. You need not re-print the changes. Unless otherwise indicated, assignments are due the day after it has been assigned. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLETING YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLETING: A. 8 HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS + FORMATS Big Picture: TO EARN A PERFECT SCORE ON EACH BIG PICTURE QUESTION, YOU MUST: CLAIM: restate the question + provide a complete answer to the question; EVIDENCE: provide evidence—evidence is brief and specific. CONCLUSION: provide a conclusion that is both analytical and summative. STYLE: Example—you should outline your response in the following fashion: Q.What is the significance of the Paleolithic era in world history? CLAIM: During the Paleolithic era, humans created a way of life that has sustained humankind over 95% of the time that our species has inhabited the earth. In fact, the Paleolithic lifestyle was not challenged by alternatives until 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. EVIDENCE: E1—Paleolithic people initiated technologies--hand axe, Clovis point. E2—Paleolithic people were spiritual—Venus figurines, Paleolithic rock art. E3—Paleolithic people adapted to their environment– “settling down” and migrations from Africa. CONCLUSION: Humans emerged in Africa 250,000 years ago and stayed there exclusively for 100,000 years. Archeological evidence reveals that they initiated the use of tool making by flinting stones, using bones and animal skins (hand axe, Clovis point, bows and arrows) for survival. Many were spiritual and buried their dead, built religious figurines (Venus Figurine) and drew art that may reflect spirituality (Paleolithic Rock Art). Many practiced an egalitarian lifestyle and lived in collaboration (Captain Cook’s encounter with Aboriginals of Australia, Strayer p. 21). After the last Ice Age ended many Paleolithic people inspired a great transition and movement throughout the globe (Strayer pp. 23-24). While some, such as the Jomon of Japan, learned to live in settlements; others traveled across land bridges to new lands. They are significant because for the first 200,000 years of human life, they endured!

9 Second Thoughts: (a): DEFINITION: Always write the term you are to define, and then provide a coherent definition of that term. If you copy the definition from the text or from another source indicate such with quotes followed by the name and the page of the source. Example: “Sub-Sahara Africa is normally divided into two ecological zones: the savanna grasslands….and the forest areas farther south..” (Strayer, p. 349) (b): SIGNIFICANCE: In your own words, explain why the term is historically, politically and/or socially significant. (c): EVIDENCE: Provide evidence either from the text or from another reliable source to support your position in “b” (significance). STYLE: You are to outline your answer. Here is an example of a perfect score: Dream Time: (a)definition—a complex worldview that humans live in a “vibration, an echo… of ancestral happenings…” linking the people of the present with their ancestors of the past. (Strayer, p. 17); (b)Significance —It is significant because it is a window into the spirituality of ancient people. It gives us an insight into ancient societies. (c) Evidence—this was and is a worldview held by Australia’s Aboriginal people.

10 REMEMBER WHEN READING THE VISUAL AND READING DOCUMENTS WHICH ARE AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER: 1 ST ALWAYS OUTLINE THE INTRODUCTION. The introduction is the background information that the author provides to the reader prior to each picture or document. The text book’s introductions tend to run about ½ to 1 full page in length. (IT IS IMPORTANT TO READ AND OUTLINE EACH INTRODUCTION BECAUSE THE INTRODUCTION INFORMS THE STUDENT ABOUT THE DOCUMENT’S SETTING AND RELEVANT HISTORY. BE INFORMED!) 2 ND ANSWER ANY ASSIGNED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE DOCUMENTS (VISUAL AND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS). Answer the question as follows: (a) Visual and Written Document questions ask students to answer a “what” or “why” question. Provide your answer (what, why or your opinion); (b) Provide evidence to back your claim. HOW TO ANSWER VISUAL AND/OR DOCUMENT- BASED QUESTIONS.
