What do you look at in a portrait? Clothes Hairstyles Background Facial Expression Pose Objects or symbols Colours Style of painting (realistic/abstract/impressionistic)

What we are going to find out about Portrait Painting 1. Visual language – we will find out how to describe portraits in terms of: Colour Composition (background and pose) Application of paint Tone Texture Pattern Contrast 2. We will look at examples of the work of artists from Europe in the 1600s and France in the 1800s. 3. We will learn about the people in the paintings.
