Big Questions Essential Question: Explain how the Manchu overthrew the Ming and established a multi- ethnic Qing Dynasty that doubled the size of the Chinese Empire Learning Objective: Explain how the Manchu were able to invade and bring an end to the Ming Dynasty.

Manchu Invasion Manchu Dynasty AKA the Qing Dynasty This is the last dynasty of China: 1644 C.E. - 1912 C.E. Founded by the Manchu people semi-nomadic people from North East China

Manchu Invasion 1644: The Manchu were able to take advantage of rebellions against the Ming Ming Rebellions unable to pay/supply their troops, peasants are starving, famine is causing hardship Beijing was conquered by rebel forces led by Li Zicheng Ming army did not protect the capital because they mutinied Rather than be captured, the last Ming emperor hanged himself

Manchu Invasion Wu Sangui (Ming general) allied himself with the Manchu He did this in order to drive out the rebel forces They were successful but this allowed the Manchu to take over

The Shunzhi Emperor Emperor Shunzhi was the first emperor of the dynasty He was a child when he took the throne (6 years old) During his rule, the main priority of the court was to conquer the rest of the empire and establish a government for the new empire

Manchu Dynasty China developed peacefully it was a time of economic growth & development Tried to force their way of life on China but adopted Chinese cultures & traditions instead Limits: Only Manchu could hold the highest government office Marriage was forbidden between Manchu & Han Imperial China reached its height of power

End of the Qing Dynasty The Qing Dynasty will last until 1912 It faced many, many problems in its last decades (wars, rebellions, natural disasters, poor education, little modernization) The last emperor will abdicate the throne after a successful rebellion – but more on this later in the year!
