Achieving the Dream is a multiyear national initiative to help more community college students succeed. The initiative is particularly concerned about student groups that traditionally have faced significant barriers to success, including students of color and low income students. The Early Alert Initiative Syllabus Statement Durham Technical Community College is dedicated to helping you achieve academic success. The Early Alert Initiative has been designed to help you if you are in danger of not completing your course successfully. If an instructor sends a referral form to the Early Alert Counselor or Tutor, you will be contacted, so we can help you stay on track. If you need help at any point in the semester, please let your instructor know.

An Early Alert Tutorial Session

The Early Alert Tutor Professional tutors (paid $13/hour) Tutors contact student and schedule an appointment Tutors have their own offices, phone lines, and college e-mail accounts to facilitate outreach. Developmental Studies students are referred by their instructors. Instructors refer students within first six weeks of the semester. Students meet with tutors once per week for thirty- to sixty-minute appointments. Students in gateway courses will be eligible in future semesters.

Early Alert Counseling and Mentoring Counselors receive the referral from the Developmental Studies instructors Counselors contact the student, either via phone e-mail or by going to the classroom Once contact is made, the counselor works with the student to help build academic coping skills Mentors receive referrals from the Early Alert Counselor Mentors contact and meet with the student to help build academic coping skills Mentors sometimes refer students to Campus Resources such as Counseling and the Campus Learning Center
