2  1. SUPPORT – it supports the softer tissues and provides points of attachment for most skeletal muscles.  2. PROTECTION – bones protect internal organs from injury (skull protects brain)  3. MOVEMENT – muscles attach to bones, and allow the body to move at joints when the muscles contract

3  4. PRODUCTION OF BLOOD – blood cells are produced in bone marrow in larger bones  5. STORAGE – minerals (Calcium and Phosphorus) stored in bones and can be released into the blood to keep proper a balance

4  Cartilage : Found on the ends of bones, it is slippery and flexible to protect bones at joints.

5  Hard bone: strong material found on the outside of bone. Provides great strength.  Periosteum: thin membrane covering the outside of bones

6  Spongy Bone: located on the ends of bones, made of many open spaces, makes bones lightweight and strong

7  Marrow: found in the center of bones, makes new blood cells
