FUNCTIONS Movement The joints between bones permit movement, some allowing a wider range of movement than others. Movement is powered by skeletal muscles, which are attached to the skeleton at various sites on bones. BALL AND SOCKET

FUNCTION Protection Protects vital organs: Skull- protects brain, eyes and inner ears Vertebrae- protects the spinal cord Rib Cage- protects lungs, heart and major blood vessels Scapula- protects shoulder Ilium- protects digestive systems and the hip Patella- protects knee RIB CAGE

FUNCTION Blood Cell Production The skeleton is the site of haematopoiesis, which takes place in red bone marrow

FUNCTION Storage Bone matrix can store calcium and is involved in calcium metabolism, and bone marrow can store iron and is involved in iron metabolism

DISEASES Bursitis: a disorder that causes pain in the bodies joints. It most commonly affects the shoulder and hip joints. The inflammation usually results from over-activity of an arm or leg.

DISEASES Scoliosis: a side to side curve of the spine. This condition becomes apparent during adolescence.
