Nanoparticles
4
Quantum Dots (QDs) Nanometre-scale semiconductor crystals
6
Quantum Dots (QDs) How it works...
7
Quantum Dots (QDs) Relationship between crystal size and colour The smaller the size, the shorter the wavelenght
8
Quantum Dots (QDs) Advantages in comparison with conventional Dyes -QDs emit light at a variety of precise wavelenghts -QDs can be excited by any wavelenght shorter than the one it emits -QDs have wide range of avaible colours -QDs are extremely stable
9
Quantum Dots (QDs) Ways of obtaining nanoparticles -Sol-gel -Plasma -Mechanochemical -Aerosol processing -High-energy ball milling -Polyol and other chemical -Hydrothermal processing -Other chemical and physical techniques as needed
10
Quantum Dots (QDs) Applications
11
Life science Controling the size and phase of semiconductor nanocrystals by biological materials (peptides, etc.) QDs as a markers

Gd 2 O 3 :Tb 3+ @SiO x [1] [1] Chem. Mater. 2005, 17, 1673-1682 Double Luminescence for Biological Labeling
15
Optical properties of Gd 2 O 3 :Tb 3 Double Luminescence for Biological Labeling -high photostability -narrow emission bands
16
Gd 2 O 3 :Tb 3+ @SiO x system The role of the layer : Gd 2 O 3 :Tb 3+ @SiO x system The role of the layer : Double Luminescence for Biological Labeling -allows the dispersion of the particles in aqueous solution without loss of luminescence intensivity -the luminescence of polisiloxane-coated Gd 2 O 3 nanoparticles is more intense than that in the case of the naked core Gd 2 O 3 -in the presence of amino groups, organic dyes and biotargeting groups (nucleic acid, biotin, streptavid) were covalently linked to the polisiloxane network
