3 Facts About Islam  Most important of the six articles of Islamic faith is the faith in the One Almighty God.  Allah (“God” in Arabic is the formal way of addressing God. Allah means god in Arabic.  The holiest site in Islam is Mecca (present day Saudi Arabia)  Islam does not advocate forced conversion; the term jihad (holy struggle) may represent an inner spiritual conflict.

4 Facts about Islam  According to Islam, Jesus Christ was a prophet of God and a man to be revered.  Muslims believe that after death each soul will be judged according to its deeds and will receive eternal paradise or Hell.  Islam does not advocate the subjugation of women; men and women are equal in the eyes of God  Muslims do not eat pork or drink alcohol  Because of strict laws against idolatry, traditional Islamic art avoided images of humans or animals

5 Muhammad  Who is Muhammad to Muslims?

6 Muhammad  Troubled by gap between greedy wealthy elites and the generosity of most Makkans (Mecca)  Received a revelation from God through the angel Gabriel  God revealed before to Moses and Jesus, and now his final revelation was to Muhammad  His revelations were written down and became the Quran (holy book of Islam)  Islam means “peace through submission to the will of Allah.”

7 Muhammad  Eventually, Muhammad became a religious and political leader  His military skills enabled him to put together a reliable military force to defend himself and his followers  Muhammad is not considered divine. He was only a prophet

8 Five Pillars of Islam  Belief  One God and Muhammad is His messenger  Daily prayer  Five times a day  Charity  Give to poor  Fasting  During Ramadan do not eat or drink from dawn to sunset  Pilgrimage  To Mecca (Makkah) at least once

9 Islamic Culture  “All equal in eyes of God”  Upper class of ruling families, senior officials, nomadic elites, and wealthy merchants  Men dominate in Muslim society  Philosophy and Science  Studied Greek philosophers and scientists  Plato, Aristotle  Made paper (developed from Chinese)  It was from the Muslims that Europe recovered the works of great philosophers and scientists  Europeans also got a lot of medical knowledge from the Muslims
