WHAT’S CYBERBULLYING? Cyberbullying is similar to other types of bullying, except it takes place online and through text messages sent to cell phones. Cyberbullies can be classmates, online acquaintances, and even anonymous users, but most often they do know their victims.

AND ITS EFFECTS? It can occur in the child's home. It can be harsher than face-to-face bullying. It can be far-reaching. It can be anonymous. It may seem inescapable.

DIRECT ATTACK? 1.Instant messaging/text harassment 2.Stealing passwords 3.Blogs 4.Websites 5.Sending pictures through email and text 6.Internet polling 7.Interactive gaming 8.Sending malicious code 9.Sending porn or other junk emails 10.Impersonation

TEENS & SEXTING? 4% of cell-owning teens ages 12-17 say they have sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images of themselves to someone else via text messaging 15% of cell-owning teens ages 12-17 say they have received “sexts” Older teens are much more likely to send and receive these images The teens who pay their own phone bills are more likely to send “sexts”

TEENS & SEXTING? 3 main scenarios for sexting: 1.exchange of images solely between two romantic partners; 2.exchanges between partners that are shared with others outside the relationship; 3.exchanges between people who are not yet in a relationship, but where at least one person hopes to be.

TEENS & SEXTING? But have the numbers grown even higher since 2009? How many teens say they have sent/posted nude or seminude pictures or video of themselves? 20% of teens overall 22% of teen girls 18% of teen boys 11% of young teen girls (ages 13-16)

TEENS & SEXTING? How many teens are sending or posting sexually suggestive messages? 39% of all teens 37% of teen girls 40% of teen boys 48% of teens say they have received such messages

WHAT’S GOING ON IN TEXAS? SB 407 was just signed into law by Gov. Perry. Reduces sexting to a misdemeanor. Punishable by a fine of not more than $4,000, confinement in jail for less than a year, or both.

WHAT TO DO AS A PARENT? 1.Talk to your kids about what they’re doing in cyberspace. 2.Know who your kids are communicating with. 3.Consider limitations on electronic communication. 4.Be aware of what your teens are posting publicly. 5.Set expectations.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT… 1.Don’t assume anything you send or post is going to remain private. 2.There is no changing your mind in cyberspace. 3.Don’t give into pressure to do something that makes you uncomfortable. 4.Consider the recipient’s reaction. 5.Nothing is truly anonymous.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT… Young people do care about privacy.
