Safaga-Al Quseir Road Supply: 2 lanes, reasonable condition. Qena-Qift Roads Supply: 2 lane road, narrow, junctions congested; Desert Road (North-South, parallel, 15 Km East, to Qena-Qift road), connects to Luxor Supply: 2 lanes, good condition Qift – Al Quseir Road Supply: 2 lanes, reasonable condition Internal GT Rural roads: all unpaved

Planned The construction of four pilot river transport ports in Qena, Sohag, Meet Ghamr and Assuit, under Public-Private Partnerships.

Supply: line capacity 48 trains per day (Qena Gov. source). Single track narrow gauge Qena-to-Safaga port (freight). Operated until 2011, predominantly for phosphates to Abu Tartour port. Demand: around 600,000 tons per year from El Nasr Mines and a total of 6,000 tons per day (ENR source).

10 Infrastructure NEEDs for Mining Investment

11 Infrastructure Mining Investment Perceived infrastructure problems that discourage mining investors interested in the Golden Triangle area Access to and availability of water – mining, especially metal mining requires considerable water usage The Golden Triangle and surrounding region has very poor available water resources Access to and availability of electrical power – mining, especially when processing is involved, requires large amounts of reliable electrical power Although some power lines cross the Golden Triangle and surrounding areas, there are concerns about availability, reliability and cost

12 Infrastructure Mining Investment Perceived infrastructure problems (continued) Transportation conditions – good transportation options are needed for modern mining operations, including good roads, railroads, and port facilities The Golden Triangle and surrounding region has marginally effective road systems and reasonable port availability, but the rail system in the area has been destroyed Accommodations and services for employees All towns and services are either in the Nile valley or along the Red Sea, nether of which is convenient to many potential mining locations

13 GT infrastructure needed Actions (1) Pavement of selected strategic Rural Roads Qena-Qift road: needs upgrade and traffic regulation Management of general overloading of trucks causing damage to surface Safaga Commercial Port: dredging for draft at alumina terminal, separation between mix of trucks and passengers at Ropax terminal

14 GT infrastructure needed Actions (2) Hamrawein port : improve quay lenght, dredging regularly due to cargo spillage, manage serious dust pollution due to poor handling technology applied Study and design rail connection to main ports (Rail line Safaga-Qena stolen) Multimodal transfer station may be required along the Nile
