PCMS Media Center Our media center is located near the front of the school. It is directly beyond the office and greets teachers, students, and visitors as they enter the building.

Media Offices The MC has two office spaces. One is currently being used for our graduation coach and is located in the corner of the MC. The other is the main office for our MS and is directly behind the circulation desk. The MS office has windows along one wall so the MC is visible from within the room. MS Office Grad. Coach Office

Circulation Desk The circulation desk is located to your left as you enter the library, and it is directly in front of the MS office. A convenient book drop faces the door of the library.

Computer Area Our MC has 30 computers with a scanner and laser printer for class or individual use. All computers face a projection screen on which PPTs, videos, and other material can be shown. An LCD projector is stationed at the center of the computers for use in teaching a whole class. All computer screens are visible from the circulation desk.

Seating Area The seating area consists of 4 round tables and 7 rectangular tables. Approximately 50 students can be seated in this area.

Work Room This room contains two copiers, a laminator, an Ellison die-cut machine, and a table with office supplies for teacher use. It also houses equipment for our Kiosk. This is used to broadcast school announcements throughout the day on classroom TVs.

Storage Room This long, narrow room contains shelves down one wall with magazines, catalogs, cassette tape players, and other miscellaneous items. A refrigerator and microwave are also located in this room. TVs and overhead carts are stored in the center of the room.

Audio/Visual Room This room is only 3 ft. x 10 ft. and houses mechanical equipment for the school’s server as well as our video collection. Our audio-visual collection currently consists of 604 titles.

Book Shelves FICTION NONFICTION Nonfiction shelves are located to the left of the circulation desk. MS can see down each row of shelves. Fiction shelves are directly in front of the circulation desk and to your immediate right when you enter the library. Shelves around the wall form a U-shape and two long shelves line the middle of the U.

Book Shelves REFERENCE Reference shelves are located to the front left of the circulation desk. They form an L- shape around the seating area.

Facility Improvements Improvements Made: –Because there is another computer lab in the school, limit the number of computers in the media center. –Arrange all bookshelves so that they are on the same side of the library. –Move the seating area (wooden tables & chairs) to the opposite side of the library and stagger their position. –Add a comfortable seating area for students to lounge and enjoy reading books for pleasure. –Due to empty shelves, decrease the size and/or number of shelves in the reference area. PCMS Media Center Policy The media center is open to students and faculty throughout each day of the academic year. The media center is one in which students and teachers have access to resources individually, with classes, and in small groups. Students wishing to use the media center during class time must have their school agenda with them when they come to the MC. PCMS media center uses a flexible schedule so that classes may access the facility and its resources during a time of need. Hours of Operation: Mondays = 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Tues.-Fri. = 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Accessibility

PCMS Media Center Policy PCMS has one certified media specialist and one media clerk. The school’s media committee addresses media concerns at the school level and provides input to the system media committee. Members of the school media committee should include the media specialist, an administrator, a teacher representative from each grade level or department, a student representative, and a community or parent representative. The PCMS media committee develops immediate and long range goals for the media program, evaluates media services, revises media policies, and recommends priorities for the media budget proposal. PCMS Media Center Policy Teachers may request that media materials (both print and non-print) be placed on reserve. A request for materials to be used in the classroom must be made three (3) days in advance of the planned assignment. These collections will be restricted to one week usage. Circulation: Teachers

PCMS Media Center Policy All students will be issued an ID card at the beginning of the school year at no charge. The ID must be used in order to check out books. If the ID is lost or damaged, a replacement fee of $2.00 will be required. Students are NOT allowed to check out books for other students. All students are limited to check out two books at a time. Materials are due back after 2 weeks with the option of a one- time renewal. Circulation: Students

PCMS Media Center Policy A fine of.10 cents per school day will be charged for overdue material. A replacement charge will be made for lost or damaged books. A $2.00 book processing charge will be added to the price of the lost or damaged book. This charge is non-refundable. Students who have two overdue books from the media center or have outstanding fines are subject to termination of media center privileges and will not be allowed to participate in end-of-the-year fun activities. PCMS Media Center Policy The media center budget is based on its number of patrons. The MC generally receives around $9-11 per student. The school media committee recommends priorities for the media budget. Funding

PCMS Media Center Policy The complaint should be referred to the principal of the school involved. A letter should be sent to the complainant explaining the procedures of this policy. In the event that the person making an objection to material is not satisfied with the initial explanation, the completed appeal form shall be filed with the principal and a copy forwarded to the school media committee. The committee will meet with the complainant in an effort to reach an amicable and acceptable decision on the issue. If an agreement cannot be reached, the complainant may appeal to the Systemwide Media Committee who will make a recommendation the BOE. The BOE will make the final decision on the matter. The principal shall notify the complainant of the board’s decision in a reasonable and timely manner. A copy of the letter should be kept on file in the principal’s office along with the appeal form. PCMS Media Center Policy © The media specialist shall serve as the person responsible for providing copyright information and managing the school’s established process for dealing with copyright questions and clearance. Copyright © Educators wishing to receive permission to reproduce materials not automatically allowed under the Copyright Act shall secure a Copyright Clearance Form from the media specialist and send it to the owner of the material. Material should not be copied prior to receipt of approval from the author. The MS will maintain a copy of all requests. The MS is not responsible for faculty members who violate the copyright law.

PCMS Media Center Policy All non-school owned materials, such as videotapes, must be approved by the principal and media specialist. The appropriate form must be submitted at least three (3) days in advance of classroom use. Videos must have a “G” rating. Non-School Owned Material

Pierce Co. Policy Staff and students, under the direct supervision of the teacher, may use the Internet for personal development through research and exploration that are consistent with the instructional goals of Pierce County schools. Students are not permitted to “surf” the internet without direct supervision of the instructional staff. Users must comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act. Technology protection measures shall be used to filter or block Internet access to inappropriate information. Steps shall be taken to promote the safety and security of users of Pierce County school’s online computer network when using e- mail, chat rooms, instant messaging, and other forms of direct electronic communication. Additional Media Center Policies Because no selection policy currently exists in writing, the media committee needs to establish this as soon as possible. The policy should include the following: –The philosophy and objectives of the school’s media center –The individuals who make up the media committee and their role –Criteria for selection of materials such as age level, reading levels, copyright, curriculum support, etc. Selection of Instructional Media

Additional Media Center Policies A policy needs to be established that addresses how materials will be acquired for the media center.
