Vocabulary List #9 1.averted (v): to turn away, or aside. Example: The movie was so scary for Josh that he averted his eyes from the screen. 2.avaricious (adj): greedy. Example: The avaricious girl took all of the books for herself and left none for the rest of the students to read. 3.congenial (adj): agreeable, pleasing in character. Example: Because Trey was such a congenial person, everyone wanted him to be in their group for the project. 4.conspiratorial (adj) suggestive of a secret plot. Example: The girls created a conspiratorial group with the aim of putting smiley face stickers on everyone’s backpack on their birthday.

5.credulity (n): willingness to believe to trust too easily; gullible. Example: Because of her credulity, Marta believed she was getting a real, live unicorn for Christmas. 6.emanate (v): to flow out or come forth. Example: Kennedy was delighted to watch the glow emanate from the fireflies, as they flew around the trees on the lawn. 7.facades (n): fronts of buildings. Example: During the renovation of downtown, all the facades were repainted in bright, crisp colors. 8.lucid (adj): clear understanding; rational. Example: The teacher’s instructions were hard to follow because I wasn’t very lucid; the fire engines at my neighbors house had kept me up all night.

9.placidly (adv): calmly, peacefully Example: I placidly lounged on the beach without a care in the world. 10.presumptuous (adj): unwarrantedly; with a readiness to presume; bold. Example: It was very presumptuous of Clay to assume that all of his friends could afford the airfare to join him in Europe for his party. 11.prosaic (adj): dull, unimaginative, common Example: I thought I was a decent writer, but after reading John Steinbeck my words seem rather prosaic by comparison. 12.regally (adv): in the manner of royalty; like a king or queen Example: Sam regally waved down at us from the castle window, during our tour in London.

13.rapacious (adj): greedy Example: The rapacious bus driver emptied everyone’s purses and wallets when the passengers got out for a restroom break. 14.sterile (adj): free from germs. Example: The doctors scrubbed their hands and put on protective gloves before entering the sterile environment of the operating room. 15.tantalizing (adj): provoking or arousing desire or interest, especially if unattainable or beyond one’s reach. Example: The promise of getting a car of my choice upon graduation was a tantalizing incentive put forth by my parents to inspire good grades throughout high school.
