Around 1920, he was the unquestioned leader of the National Socialist German Workers, or Nazi, party. In 1923, he failed in an attempt to seize power in Munich, and was arrested and found guilty of treason. While in jail, Hitler wrote Mein Kampf, which became the book of Nazi goals and beliefs. He believed Germans belonged to an Aryan race, whose greatest enemies were Jews. Adolf was appointed chancellor of Germany in 1933, and within a year, he was the dictator of Germany.

10. The Third Reich Hitler appealed to nationalism by recalling past glories. First Reich- Holy Roman Empire. Second Reich- Bismarck's empire in 1871. Hitler said that under his new Third Reich, Germany's Aryan Race would dominate all of Europe for a thousand years.
