5 History of IKA Tradition of topography and cartography at ETHZ since 1855: Wild, Becker, Imhof, Spiess IKA founded in 1925 by Prof. Eduard Imhof Oldest academic research institute in cartography worldwide Focus in topographic, thematic and atlas cartography Atlas of Switzerland, Swiss World Atlas
6
6 Mission Maintain and develop strengths and knowledge in cartographic visualisation Apply and extend to new media, IT and thematic fields Promote the power of cartographic methodologies to (GIS) users and students Less data acquisition; more data selection, harmonisation, interaction and visualisation

18 My Work at IKA 2002 - 2005 Within GITTA... Developing Guidelines for Screendesign for the development of e-learning materials within GITTA, distributed to all GITTA authors. Creating design for user interface, navigation, etc. Creating lessons for GITTA with the topics: Colour Design, Typography, Topographic Cartography, Thematic Cartography This includes text writing, multimedia asset generation and implementation into XML /ELML
19
19 Planned Future Activities Within GITTA... Clarify Copyrights & open content under Creative Commons License in autumn 2005.. for GITTA means: Attribution Requirement Share Alike Non Commercial Set up an authorisation tool letting accepted authors make contributions to GITTA Built a GITTA Community & benefit from content-quality improvements
20
20 My Work at IKA 2002 - 2005 Within Teaching Cartography at IKA... Managing the course organisation, structure & exercises Involved in Lectures: Basic Cartography, Thematic Carto – former GIS & Cartography, Data Transfer, MapPublisher, Adobe Illustrator Supporting exercises Scriptwriting Preparing Thematic Cartography Lecture
21
21 Planned Future Activities Within Teaching Cartography at IKA... Consolidate new contents on Bachelor & Master-level
22
22 My Work at IKA 2002 - 2005 Within Conception of Cartography Courses... Develop a hybrid-learning concept for our new thematic cartography lecture Concentrating on theoretical aspects within e-learning (media-didactic, CSCW, Usability, Instructional Design, Course design, Laws in e-learning, Ethics, etc.) Find a concept to implement it as hybrid-learning course.
23
23 Planned Future Activities Within Conception of Cartography Courses... Realise thematic Cartography course as hybrid teached course within an ex-cathedra teaching environment Derive materials for implementing & using in GITTA as hybrid teached course Create a concept for pure online teaching & learning with GITTA materials Derive & extend materials possible to use as pure online course
24
24 Contributions to the ICA CETs Aims? GITTA = web-based Cartography course Independant program that can be used and extended by anyone authorised, e.g. YOU. With GITTAs newly created E-Lesson Markup Language ELML, a template for creating modules exist as open-source application based on XML – see: www.sourceforge.net The concept for pure online learning in Cartography as base for teaching students living far apart Results... contd
25
25 Contributions to the ICA CETs Aims? Results I... Teaching students online in Cartography Requirements: As described in David Frasers paper The Web Course in Cartography – some preliminary thoughts (2000) Access & Interaction: see D.Fraser 2000 Free Access, Ability to download on the fly (except interactive elements), non commercial, etc. contd
26
26 Contributions to the ICA CETs Aims? Results II... Requirements for course participants: Via Learning Managment System (as open source available) able to check upon their progress, through tests, self-assessments, exercises, etc... accompanied by teaching staff Interaction possible on various ways that are are technically now possible also via free tools GITTA or LMS offers answers to questions asked Accompanying as a NEED for guiding, feedback and motivation and many more..... to be discussed...
27
27 The ICA CETs aims and demands of course functionallity in comparison with GITTAs aims & functionality are very similar. GITTAs technique and pool of basic learning materials +PLUS + Contributions from YOU – ICA CET Members and any further authorised person =equals= WEB COURSE as ICA CET strived for. Conclusion
