Phases of Matter Unit Monday, October 17, 2011 Objective: SWBAT describe the four states of matter and how it relates to thermal/kinetic energy. BR: What are the states of matter? What is the difference at the molecular level between a gas and a solid? Determine the molecular mass of the following compounds. Be sure to show your work: 1. Al(NO 3 ) 3 = 27+(14x3)+(16 x 9)=213 amu 2. Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 = (2x27)+(32x3)+(16 x 12)=342 amu 3. 5 BaCrO 4 = 5(137 +52 + (16 x 4))= 1265 amu 4. Evaporation Rates HIGH EVAPORATION RATES will be recognized by a BIG change in temperature Molecules that evaporate quickly will have – LOW MOLECULAR MASS and – LOW/(WEAK) IF’s – (remember that evaporation is an ENDOTHERMIC process and will therefore take energy AWAY from the thermometer

Evaporation Rates SLOW EVAPORATION RATES will be recognized by a SMALL change in temperature Molecules that evaporate slowlly will have – HIGH MOLECULAR MASS and – HIGH/(STRONG) IF’s – (remember that evaporation is an ENDOTHERMIC process and will therefore take energy AWAY from the thermometer
