L, E & P ISSUES1 Follow up on PSP: The PSP is about QUALITY - numerous measures are used - with the obvious commitments to data collection. One of the measures is A/FR - appraisal/failure ratio For more information, see:- http://www.sei.cmu.edu/pub/documents/00.reports /pdf/00tr022.pdf

L, E & P ISSUES2 PSP Discipline A principal problem in any engineering field is getting engineers to consistently use the methods they have been taught. In the PSP, these methods are: following a defined process, planning the work, gathering data, and using these data to analyze and improve the process. While this sounds simple in concept, it is not easy in practice. ……………….. This is the main reason that the SEI developed the Team Software Process: to provide the disciplined environment that engineers need to consistently use the PSP methods in practice.

L, E & P ISSUES7 The Data Protection Act For those who think they’re good at writing or understanding code, try your hand at reading the Data Protection Act, located at: http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1998/1998029.htm

L, E & P ISSUES8 Principles of Data Protection The rules are: that anyone processing personal data must comply with the eight enforceable principles of good practice. Which say that data must be: n n fairly and lawfully processed; n n processed for limited purposes; n n adequate, relevant and not excessive; n n accurate; n n not kept longer than necessary; n n processed in accordance with the data subject's rights; n n secure; n n not transferred to countries without adequate protection.

L, E & P ISSUES9 Personal Data is: Personal data covers both facts and opinions about an individual. It also includes information regarding the intentions of the ‘data controller’ towards the individual, although in some limited circumstances exemptions will apply. With processing, the definition is far wider than before. For example, it incorporates the concepts of 'obtaining', holding' and 'disclosing'. (see: http://www.dataprotection.gov.uk/principl.htm)

L, E & P ISSUES10 Other Legislation / Regulation In addition to the Data protection Act there are many more pieces of legislation relating to IT. Further information can be found at: http://www.dti.gov.uk/cii/
