3 Discovering European Science and Engineering project I. General outlines of the project Related subjects: - Engineering sciences, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, history and geography, English and French Exchanges: –From Redditch to Troyes: from 08/3/2009 to13/3/2009 –From Troyes to Redditch: from 25/1/2009 to 01/2/2009 Participants: more than 60 people were involved –Redditch: 36 students and 5 teachers –Troyes: 14 students from class level 2 nde and 10 teachers

4 share our lives in our establishments, their origins, our towns. visit industrial and cultural sites. follow lessons in Sciences and technology. get to know a host family (daily life, customs) Discovering European Science and Engineering project II. 1.Contents : This project, based on Engineering sciences allowed us to: 2.Objectives: Create European relationships Develop written and spoken communication in English and French Allow us to visit industrial sites Encourage our students to become involved and to reflect upon their work Allow us to compare and improve our teaching methods Improve the quality of teaching

5 Discovering European Science and Engineering project III. First exchange 25 January 2009 Arrival in England (Redditch) End of the day with host family 26. Second day Morning: Visit of St Augustine’s Catholic High School Afternoon: visit of Morgan’s firm

First exchange 27 January Visit to London: cabs, telephone booths and the Queen’s horse guards 28 January Visit of Cadbury’s firm Visit of Shakespeare’s house 29 January All day spent in St Augustine’s Catholic High School to : - participate in Physics and Technology lessons - participate in language lessons (English and French)

7 Discovering European Science and Engineering project III. First exchange - Create the casting of the bottle of Champagne 1 – Explanations of the moulding 2 - Casting safety 3 – Un-moulding 2  1 3

Second exchange 8 March 2009 Arrival in France (Troyes) End of the day with host family 9 March Morning: - Visit of our school - Participation in language, maths, physics, PhE, and history lessons Afternoon: visit to local business (a cellar and a vineyard) Evening: skating-rink 10 March All the day spent to do vocational activities such as CAD,CIM and CAM

9 Discovering European Science and Engineering project IV. Second exchange * CAD (Computer-Aided Design) By mixing pairs, all the students drew the diagram of the product.

10 Discovering European Science and Engineering project IV. Second exchange 1-Preparation with a computer 2- Simulation 3- Programme * CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) By groups all the students made their own « bottle of Champagne ».

11 Discovering European Science and Engineering project IV. Second exchange * CIM (Computer-Integrated Manufacturing) All the students set up their own « bottle of Champagne » by : -Drilling -Burring -Assemblying Last, but not least in the evening : the bowling party ! 4- Manufacturing

13 Discovering European Science and Engineering project V. Results and final products 51 - Results : Thanks to our work together, we : Increased the richness of our technical vocabulary, both English and French. Got an insight on the European cultural and industrial world. Strengthened our educational exchanges and thus improved our working methods. Gained a better understanding of citizenship and more respect for each other. Created a technical French / English dictionary Studied and created together a manufactured product (plan, moulding, casting and finishing off) : a mini botlle of Champagne !

14 Discovering European Science and Engineering project V. Results and final products 52 - Final products: Our results were echoed : By the press, radio. Thanks to documents and products created during these exchanges. On some sites: - E.twinning - Via the portal of the Academie de Reims During our Open Door Days. By the creation of permanent displays in both schools.

Assessment / Future prospects 61- Assessment: We had : A written assessment A Feedback chat Some written students’ samples: English: 1- Improving French speaking, listening skills, making new friends and learning about a new culture. 2-The positive thing of these 2 weeks are that we met people our age that speak a different language and also I saw how the two schools are really diffirent. French: 3- Le partage était bien : nous nous rejoignons souvent en dehors des cours, organisés par les correspondants et les professeurs 4- Nous aimerions plus de temps d’échange et faire des activités avec nos correspondants exemple du sport.

16 Discovering European Science and Engineering project VI. Assessment / Future prospects 62 - Assessment We really would like to continue together and go further. Also, preparing a teacher’s exchange for a few weeks (fellowship). Another project: a students exchange for 2 weeks
