Galaxies and the Universe By Charlie Yingling James Harris And the (only)Kevin Johnson
2
The different types of galaxies There are four main types of galaxies the we know of so far. They are (from top to bottom then right) the spiral {like ours (the milky way)}lenticular, Elliptical, and Irregular.
3
Spiral Galaxies Spiral Galaxies are made of 2 major things. They are that the shape is a large flat disk. The galaxy also has many clusters of stars which form the arms of the galaxy.
4
Lenticular Galaxies Lenticular Galaxies are very similar to spiral galaxies. The biggest difference is that they do not have spirals. They do not have spirals because their stellar formation has stopped long ago. They mostly have type II stars.
5
Elliptical Galaxies Elliptical galaxies are very different from the other galaxies. They are more of a ball shape when other galaxies are flatter and spread out more. The galaxies are less dense then the other galaxies. Since they look like lenticular galaxies from the side they are usually not called elliptical.
6
The Milky Way The milky way is our home galaxy. It has four main spirals. The galaxy has a bulge in the center of it. The center is a cluster of a bunch of older stars. Our solar system is in the outer edge of one of the spirals. At some times in the year we can see the rest of the Milky way as a band of brighter stars.
7
Galaxies Galaxies come in many different shapes and sizes. They form many different patterns and colors. Galaxies may even hold intelligent life.
