Citations (cont.) Quote in middle of sentence. End the passage with quotation marks, cite the source in parentheses immediately after the quotation marks and continue the sentence with no period. Example: She stated, “The placebo effect disappeared” (APA, 2001, p. 121) but she did not clarify.

Citations (cont.) Quote at end of sentence. End quote with the punctuation outside the final parenthesis. Example: Miele (1993) found “the placebo effect disappeared” (p. 276). Text for the next sentence.

The Block Quote Each line in a block quote is indented 5 spaces and does not have quotation marks Cite the quoted source after the final punctuation mark.

The Block Quote - Example Example: Miele (1993) found the following: The placebo effect which had been verified in previous studies, disappeared when behaviors were studied in this manner. Furthermore, the behaviors were never exhibited again (p. 276).

Paraphrasing (preferred) Page and/or paragraph numbers only required for direct quotes. Example: Emotional intelligence is the ability to accurately perceive emotions in self and others, and to use emotional information to make intelligent decisions (Goleman, 2000).

References (APA) Reference page follows text and references must be cited in text. 1.5 and 1 st line is flush left with remaining lines of reference indented 5 spaces (hanging indent). See examples below
