METALS What are Metals? Metals are elements which have the following Physical Properties: Shininess Malleability - Can be pounded into shapes Hardness Ductility - Can be pulled out into a wire ( ex coat hanger) Conductivity - transmit heat & electricity easily
2
- Metals also have Chemical Properties:
Some metals are very reactive (they combine easily with other elements) Group 1 metals are the most reactive and if they are exposed to air or water can explode. Other metals such as gold are unreactive.

NONMETALS What are Nonmetals?
- In general the Physical Properties of nonmetals are opposite to those of metals Nonmetals have the following Physical Properties: Most nonmetals are gases ( O, He, H, N) Most nonmetals are dull ( not shiny) Not malleable (brittle) or ductile Poor conductors of heat & electricity
4
Nonmetals also have chemical properties
- Most nonmetals (except Noble Gases: He,Ne, Ar,Kr,Xe,Rn) readily form compounds with other elements.
