WP3 User oriented information and climate change products
2
Summary WP3 activities in the reporting period Lessons from interaction with users –What users think they need –What researchers think users need Integrative approach of using in-situ observation, gridded data, reanalysis and model results. –New user-driven indices Preliminary conclusions and follow up

WP3 activities in the reporting period Meeting with users to identify user needs –DWD, Germany (Offenbach/Langen – October 2011); –Meteo-RO, Romania (Bucuresti and Craiova – November 2011, March 2012); Knowledge transfer using Moodle platform - DWD; User requirements - DWD CIB developments - KNMI Investigating new types of climate products and services based on day by day activity (e.g. wave climatology related indices) - Meteo-RO. Deliverables: user workshops, user requirement, user guide.

Interaction with users Participants who filled in the questionnaire: 21 out of 44 Time scales: –86% were interested in present climate –52% of them were interested in near future climate (up to year 2030) –24 % of them were interested in mid-term climate (up to year 2050) –only one person out of the 21 (0.05%) was interested in long term climate (up to year 2100). Climate variable –All participants were interested in temperature data and a large majority in precipitation data (mean and extreme values). A large majority of participants (76%) explicitly mentioned extreme temperatures and precipitation as climate information important for their activities. –Air pressure and air humidity are considered important by 71% of persons. –Around 50% of participants considered important snow depth data and number of days with snow cover. –Mean evapotranspiration and sun duration values are important for 33% of responders. –14% considered strong winds important for their activities. In the context of preferred dissemination way of climate information, a large majority (81%) selected on line environment. Knoledge transfer medium: online!

Interaction with users New ways of integrating and translating information for users GIS tools (e.g. maps of observed precipitation and potential evapotranspiration over Romanian territory for the reference period 1961-1990). New ways of deriving information for users due to new request types Using satellite data, reanalysis and model results to enhance in-situ information: –Users need climate information in places without station to directly provide measured data; sometimes climate station location is not good enough for user needs. –Users intensively need new type of climate information where the observation network is not prepared for them (e.g. wave climatology for the Western part of Black Sea).
6
Interaction with users: new ways of deriving information for users - examples Satellite data for significant wave height and wind (2009-2011) http://www.aviso.oceanobs.com/ Users question: wave climatology (including wave rose) for Western Black Sea. For this, we also need wave direction information! We plan to use a climatology derived from model results, too.
7
Interaction with users: new ways of deriving information for users - examples Stress test for a nuclear plant – climate hazards for present climate Users question: model- derived theoretical limits for present extremes (and near future extremes) in the location of nuclear plant.
8
Interaction with users: new ways of deriving information for users - examples Evapotranspiration Research question: micro- climate effect of changing land use to irrigated crop. Temperature change –August (2000-2009) Evapotranspiration change –August (2000-2009) Sensitivity experiment for present climate

Preliminary conclusion and follow up Imho, to answer to user requests we need integrative approach using in-situ observation, satellite data, reanalysis and model results. GIS tools could be more extensively used for the integrative approach to provide user-friendly products and services using different types of information. Next stage: integrative climate products design (wave climatology, evapotranspiration).
