2 Course Introduction Weekly taught course which aims to develop student’s English communicative skills. Emphasis on speaking and listening at an intermediate to upper-intermediate level. Through using the Interactions book series students will be expected to have converse and discuss about real-life situations. By Christopher Spalding2 Junior English Oral Practice

3 Course Assessment Final grades – 70% examination, – 20% class attendance, – 10% homework and other exercises. Each semester consists of two exams, a midterm and a final, each composed of a listening and speaking section. By Christopher Spalding3 Junior English Oral Practice

5 Chapter 1 Academic Life Around the World – In this chapter students will listen to language about academic life, education and meeting new people. Skills Learnt – Listening for main ideas and details. – Speaking on the telephone. – Casual vocabulary and introduction expressions. – Discussing body language and guessing the meaning. – Pronunciation of stressed words and –s endings. 6 Chapter 2 Experiencing Nature – In this chapter students will listen to language about nature, weather, seasons, and vacations. Skills Learnt – Listening to weather forecasts and stories. – Discussing plans and talking about the weather. – Expressing likes and dislikes. – Comparing reduced pronunciation and unreduced. 7 Chapter 3 Living to Eat, or Eating to Live? – In this chapter students will listen to and use language for food and meals. Skills Learnt – Listening to the radio and taking notes. – Interviewing people and comparisons. – Distinguishing between count and non-count nouns, and teens and tens. – Polite refusals. 8 Chapter 4 In the Community? – In this chapter students will learn a great deal of useful language for functioning effectively in a city environment. 9 Chapter 5 Home – In this chapter students will learn language related to the home. Skills learnt – Distinguishing between past tense -ed endings. – Talk about finding somewhere to live. – Making and answering requests. – Interviewing possible roommates. – Verbs and frequency expressions. 10 Chapter 6 Cultures of the World – In this chapter students will learn and practice language for talking about the world’s cultures. Skills learnt – Listening and understanding a lecture. – Instructions for setting a formal dining table and learning about other dining customs. – Discussing manners and apologizing. – Describing feelings. 11 Chapter 7 Health – In this chapter students will learn to listen to language about health. Skills Learnt – Distinguishing between rising and falling intonation in tag questions. – Asking and giving advice about medical problems. – Discussing smoking, it’s advertisements and associated laws. – Agreeing and disagreeing. 12 Chapter 8 Entertainment and the Media – In this chapter students will learn and practice language about entertainment and the media. Skills Learnt – Listening to a news repots and radios ads. – Expressing, agreeing with, and disagreeing with opinions. – Describing TV shows and discussing them. – Learning terms related to TV and the Movies. 13 Chapter 9 Social Life – In this chapter students will listen to language for participating in social events, including dating. Skills Learnt – Interpreting intonation used with exclamations. – Giving and accepting compliments. – Discussing dating and parties in various cultures. – Comparing alternatives and selecting the best match. 14 Chapter 10 Sports – In this chapter students will learn a great deal of language to talk about sports. Skills learnt – Listening to a sportscast and conversations about sports. – Using correct nouns to describe sports and athletes. – Organizing notes into an outline. – Pronuncing the North American t and dropping the h sound in unstressed words.
