We will explain how the industrial revolution led to European imperialism including the role of military, transportation, and communication technology advancements. We will analyze the influence of physical geographic factors including the Suez and Panama Canals.

Looking at this list, pick the most influential invention/innovation! Write down why you feel this way, and then talk with your neighbor about how it changed the world... maybe even shuffle it out! Steam Engine/Boat/Train Textile Looms (Spinning Jack, etc.) Telegraph/Telephone Camera Watch (accurate, mobile time-keepers)

The chronometer was a game changer in the race for naval supremacy. Before it’s invention, sailors could only use the stars, the sun, and coastlines to navigate the seas. Harrison’s clock allowed sailors to always know what time it was back in London, specifically Greenwich. Ever heard of Greenwich Mean Time? It is the location of the Prime Meridian or zero degrees longitude. By knowing that time, they could determine their longitudinal location enabling them to pinpoint their location with extreme accuracy. This advantage helped the British to arrive faster and safer at their destinations giving them the edge in the imperial race.
5
The Spanish, French, and British navies dominated global seas in turn! This is a more artistic political cartoon, what symbols within support the idea that the scientific and industrial revolutions led to imperialism? Write your ideas down, then let’s discuss with a partner.

British Soldiers had long-range rifles and rapid-fire artillery such as the Gatling Gun. Zulus of Sub-Saharan Africa used leather shields, throwing and stabbing spears. This question is a key question in current world debate. Only now, instead of machine guns, we have drones (remote-controlled aerial weapons systems). After talking about how you would feel if you were a native against superior weapons, how do you think people in Pakistan feel about the use of drones by the United States? Is the use of superior weapons technology ever justified? Is there a difference between now and then?

Telegraph, Early 1800s iPhone, 2007 Transatlantic Telegraph Cable, 1866 The telegraph used new discoveries about electricity to communicate coded messages across the globe! Before the telegraph, messages would have to be physically transported by horse, train, or ship, now they could arrive almost instantly! What advantages would this allow? How has modern telecommunication impacted our world? Does better communication make the world smaller? Explain. Is that good or bad?

The Suez Canal opened in November 1869 after 10 years of construction work. When it opened, goods and people could travel from Europe to Asia without having to sail around Africa.
11
Write a paragraph explaining which invention/breakthrough had the greatest effect on imperial expansion.
12
We will describe the major influences of women on Imperialism such as Queen Victoria. We will review how scientific and economic revolutions led to the creation and expansion of global empires.
13
Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Empress of India
14
Queen Victoria ruled throughout almost the whole of the 19 th century overseeing tremendous changes in industry, science, culture, and empire. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, India officially changed from a protectorate to a colony of the British empire. Showing the importance of India to Britain, she added the title of Empress of India to her official title in 1876. Her reign of 63 years, 7 months, and 2 days is the longest reign of any British monarch and the longest reign of any female monarch in the world. To contrast, the current Queen of Great Britain, Elizabeth II, has ruled from February 6, 1952- Present. (63 years in 2015)

This image shows the British flag and the British lion as a skeleton on a barren field. With a partner, explain why this image may appeal to native populations under the rule of the British during the Industrial Revolution. Be sure to include all of the relative causes and effects of imperialism as related to the industrial and scientific revolutions. Hint: some British may have agreed as well. Why?
