Q6 How many persons are there in God? A. There are three persons in God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, all equal in power and glory. These three persons are one God.

The Holy Trinity Christians sometimes call God ‘The Holy Trinity’. The word ‘Trinity’ means ‘three in union’ or ‘three in one’. From the time of their captivity in Babylon the Jews were strict monotheists. How did Jews believing in one God come to believe that God though one was also three? The answer is … because of their experience of Jesus!

Jesus’ Miracles Jesus spoke of the importance of his works demonstrating that his unique claims were not blasphemous or insane. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. John 10:25 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him John 10:37-38

Mriracles: Control over nature Jesus showed that he had control over even the fish and on two occasions provided a unique catch of fish.

Miracles: Creation! The fish ‘Tilapia’ from the Sea of Galilee. It is known locally as ‘St Peter’s fish.’ In front of more than 5000 witnesses Jesus created what would amount to an articulated lorry load of bread and fish from a single picnic. He did this in an isolated location where a hoax would have been impossible. On another occasion he created the best wine at a wedding using just water.

Miracles: Control of wind and waves Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We are perishing!’ But He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?’ Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. So the men marvelled, saying, ‘Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?’ Matt. 8:26

Miracles: Resurrection He raised Lazarus from death to a further period of life. Christianity itself is based on the conviction that Jesus himself overcame death totally and has control over eternal life. …if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile! 1 Cor. 15:17

Knowledge Jesus showed he was God by his supernatural knowledge. Peter’s conviction: ‘Lord you know all things!’ John 21:17

Knowledge: He knew their thoughts! Even our most detailed brain scanners cannot see our thoughts! Jesus was able to discern what people were thinking: ‘He knew their thoughts.’ Luke 6:8

Knowledge: He knew their history. Nathaniel, who had been so sceptical about Jesus, was overwhelmed to realise that when he thought he was alone and invisible from every human eye … Jesus had been aware of him! The Samaritan woman who met Jesus by Jacob’s well became his disciple when she found out that Jesus knew her whole life story: ‘Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did.’ John 4:29 Jacob’s well today A fig tree

Words: Unique and full of authority! All who heard Jesus were impressed by his speech: ‘No man ever spoke like this Man!’ John 7:46 …the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Matt. 7:29

Words: I AM! He intentionally linked his speech about himself with the revelation of God to Moses: Before Abraham was – I am! I am the resurrection and the life! I and my Father are one!

God entering creation! History is full of men and women trying to be gods … but Jesus is the only one who being God became man! We love making models … but imagine becoming part of your model! God has come forever into his creation for our sake!

Three persons as one God! Jesus spoke of God being his Father in a unique way. Jesus’ baptism was a wonderful occasion when all three persons of the Trinity were involved: When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ Matt. 3:16-17 Christian baptism reflects this in obedience to Christ: All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matt 28:18-19
