Limited or Minimum Progress toward achievement of standard (1) Student is not able to identify contributions, compare everyday life, describe positive character traits, or describe cultural and geographic systems of historical figures listed in GPS. Progressing toward achievement of standard (2) Student inconsistently identifies contributions or compares everyday life or describes positive character traits, or describes cultural and geographic systems of historical figures listed in GPS. Consistently and independently achieves the standard (3) Student consistently identifies contributions and compares everyday life and describes positive character traits and describes cultural and geographic systems of historical figures listed in GPS. Assessment Activities After reading about historical figures, have students complete graphic organizer comparing and contrasting their contributions. Have students complete graphic organizer comparing and contrasting everyday life of figures to today. Keep an anchor chart for each historical figure to document contributions and how they are beneficial to us today, positive character traits, where they lived and how that affected their lives, and positive character traits. See attached Have students create a biography or flip book about historical figures. Each page should include each of the components of standards and elements. Students can use anchor charts to help with this. Create bio-poem about historical figures. (see attached for format) Instructional Notes: Students should know: historical figures have made significant contributions to our country. many people do things that improve life for other people. people in the past had different kinds of food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, and recreation from people today. the natural world and people around us shape what we do. SS1H1 The student will read about and describe the life of historical figures in American history. a. Identify the contributions made by these figures: Benjamin Franklin (inventor/author/statesman), Thomas Jefferson (Declaration of Independence), Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and Sacagawea (exploration), Harriet Tubman (Underground Railroad), Theodore Roosevelt (National Parks and the environment) George Washington Carver (science). b. Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, recreation). SS1CG1 The student will describe how the historical figures in SS1H1 a display positive character traits of fairness, respect for others, respect for the environment, conservation, courage, equality, tolerance, perseverance, and commitment. SS1G1 The student will describe the cultural and geographic systems associated with the historical figures in SS1H1 a.
