What does the DOI do? The United States Department of the Interior (DOI) is the responsible for: the management of federal lands conservation of most natural resources the administration of programs relating to American Indians Alaskan Natives Native Hawaiians territorial affairs insular areas of the United States

First considered by the 1 st US Congress in 1789, but those duties were placed in the Department of State Formed on March 3, 1849 by President James K. Polk Was in response to the Mexican-American War (1846-48) History
