The United States Department of the Interior (DOI) is the responsible for: the management of federal lands conservation of most natural resources the administration of programs relating to American Indians Alaskan Natives Native Hawaiians territorial affairs insular areas of the United States

3 First considered by the 1 st US Congress in 1789, but those duties were placed in the Department of State Formed on March 3, 1849 by President James K. Polk Was in response to the Mexican-American War (1846-48) History
