Today’s Lesson  Today’s Main Topic is the Learners License  Today’s Subtopics include: Comparing and Contrasting a Learner’s License between a 15 and 16-year-olds.  What are the consequences of not having a learner’s license while driving and questioned by a law enforcement officer?  Is driving a right or privilege?

3. Learner License  For a 15-year-old- applicant  Any person 15 years of age may obtain a restricted Learner’s License for the purpose of learning to safely and effectively operate a motor vehicle.  A written examination is needed to be passed from information out of the Alabama Driver’s Manuel

Learner’s License  Upon passing the required examination the applicant will be issued a Class D Alabama driver license with a “Y” restriction  After the holder’s sixteenth birthday the holder may operate a motor vehicle with any licensed driver occupying the seat besides the driver.  This Learner’s License is valid for 4 years and can be renewed once.

5. Learner License  Proof of Age for a 15 – year-old applicant  Social Security Card (or certified letter from the SS Administration  Student enrollment/Exclusion form (DL 1- 93).  State Certified Birth Certificate

Learner License  For a 16-year-old- applicant  Any person 16 years of age or older who, except for his lack of instruction in operating a motor vehicle, would otherwise be qualified to obtain a driver license, may obtain a Learner’s License upon passing the required examination  The examination for the license is taken from information in the Alabama Driver Manuel.

Learner License “Y” Restrictions  What does a “Y” Restrictions mean?  For a 15-year-old a “Y” restriction indicates that the holder may operate a motor vehicle while accompanied by a parent or legal guardian or a person who is age 21 or over, who is a duly licensed or certified driving instructor who is actually occupying a seat besides the motor vehicle operator.  For a 16-year-old a “Y” restriction indicates that the holder may only operate a motor vehicle when accompanied by a licensed driver who is actually occupying a seat besides the driver.

Learner’s License Requirements for Issuance  15 and 16-year-olds must successfully complete the required examination  This includes a written and vision screening.  The fee for the written test is $5 per test, which must be paid in cash (Tests for a Motor driven cycle license, Motorcycle License, or a boating license is $5 per test and must also be paid in cash.  A license fee of $23 is also required for the learner license.

Learner’s License Current Secondary School Attendance (Alabama Act 93-368)  As indicated under the proof of Age above, applicants age 15-19 are required to present Student Enrollment/Exclusion Form DL 1-93, proof of high school graduation, or GED document, in order to take the learner’s examination.
