New Jersey Rules and Regulations

»Motorists must always carry valid DL, Vehicle Registration and Proof of Insurance. »Legal name changes must be reported to MVC within 2 weeks and changes of residence must be reported within 1 week »Motorists who move to NJ must apply for a NJ DL within 60 days or before their Out-of-State DL expires (whichever comes first)

»Applicants under 18 must also present a completed consent form signed by their parents or guardians.

Special Learner Permits »Are valid until all qualifications for a provisional license are met, or 2 years (whichever comes first). »Examination permits are valid for 2 years or until the applicant receives his/her basic license. »Applicants are required to demonstrate responsible driving behavior in each stage of licensing before advancing to the next stage.

License Renewal »NJ issues a 4 year license »2- year license for people over 70 years old »Motorists under 21 are issued a different license than those over 21 »All DL are digital for safety reasons »Any restrictions a motorist may have will be listed on their license (i.e. corrective lenses)

Graduated Driver License »What is it? »NJ GDL is a program teens and first time drivers must complete to get their unrestricted basic driver license. »Why have it? The program is designed to reduce the # of driving fatalities among teen and 1st time drivers and their passengers.

1. Student Permit Driving Restrictions »Eligible age: 16 »No driving between 11:01 p.m. – 5:00 a.m. »No wireless telephone etc. »Must be accompanied by an Adult Supervising Driver who holds a NJ driver license (21 or older) »Student permit is issued upon passing the Driver Exam and 6 Hours of Lessons

2. Provisional License »No Driving between 11:01 and 5:00 a.m. »Passengers must be from the driver’s household plus one other person (friend etc.) »No wireless devices »At 18 you will receive basic license

3. License »Eligible Age: 18 »Requirements: Complete provisional license requirements

Proof of age & Identity Proof listed in descending order of importance: 1.Original U.S. Birth Certificate with seal 2.Certified Copy of Birth Certificate 3.Active or expired U.S. Passport 4.Valid foreign Passport (with Current visa) 5.U.S. alien registration card 6.Military I.D. Card (active duty only) 7.Adoption papers 8.Legal name change papers

Permit, non-driver ID and License Updates »If you move, you must report address change within 1 week to a DMV. »Legal Name Change- has 2 weeks to report and change on license.

Lost or Stolen Permit & License »MOTORISTS SHOULD REPORT LOSS OR STOLEN ID’S TO LOCAL POLICE IMMEDIATELY »All replacements must be done in person at the DMV

Special license for Hearing Impaired: »To obtain one you need to… »Complete an application for hearing impaired. »Obtain the verification of an audiologist.
