Driving Performance Evaluation  Presented By  Bob Hanrahan  Professional Driving Instructor Copyright 2010 mrbob4u.com

Driving Performance Evaluation You Can Pass the First Time!

Why Do People Fail? Some Examples Below  Driver does not follow through on Training  Nervous Anxiety—Driver Places too Much Pressure on Self to Pass  Driver Convinces Self That He/She Cannot Pass  Driver Demonstrates a Lack of Patience or Skill  All the Above Usually Leads to Sinful Behavior (Critical Driving Error)

Critical Driving Errors Examiner Intervention Examiner Intervention Strikes an Object/Curb Strikes an Object/Curb Disobeys Traffic Sign or Signal Disobeys Traffic Sign or Signal Disobeys Safety Personnel or Safety Vehicles Disobeys Safety Personnel or Safety Vehicles Dangerous Maneuver Dangerous Maneuver Speed Speed Auxiliary Equipment Auxiliary Equipment Lane Violation Lane Violation

Why Do People Fail?  Remember, you are taking a Driving Performance test, or as the DMV describes it, a Driving Performance Evaluation.  You must perform certain actions safely to pass.  Your knowledge was tested when you took your Permit test.

Why Do People Fail?  Believe it or Not— Many Failures Occur Because the Driver Drives Too S-L-0-W!!!  Drive at, or slightly below the speed limit, but not more than 5MPH below the speed limit

Why Do People Fail?  The failure to do a traffic check is the most common reason for errors on the test.  The failure to check your blind spot before any direction change is the most common reason for failing the test.

Why Do People Fail?  Failure to turn your head to accomplish a proper traffic check.  Failure to look over your shoulder to accomplish a proper blind spot check  Bad things can happen if you do not look!!! Look Right to See what happened to me!!!  The driver of the white car said to the driver of the green car: I didn’t see you! Can you guess why? (9/19/10—4S Ranch)  Many people look, but they do not see! Do not make this mistake.

Pre-Drive Check List EEEEmergency Brake

Pre-Drive Check List  Know your Arm Signals: LEFT RIGHT STOP/SLOW LEFT RIGHT STOP/SLOW

Pre-Drive Check List  Windshield Wiper  Front Window Defroster

Pre-Drive Check List EEEEmergency Flashers HHHHeadlights

On The Road  Do Only What the Examiner Asks You to Do.  Do Not Do Anything on Your Own Unless it is an Emergency!!!!!

On The Road AAAAfter completion of the Pre-Drive Checklist: The Examiner will probably ask you to sign your DPE Score sheet The Examiner will Walk around to get into your Car (Make sure the doors are unlocked) Fasten Seatbelt (If not, ask them to do so) If you try to start the engine, or otherwise try to drive, you will fail if the Examiner is NOT belted! (Deadly Sin #5…a Dangerous Maneuver)

 Once in the car and belted, the Examiner should tell you the following (but they often do not):  “I am not allowed to trick you or tell you to do anything illegal, do you have any questions?”

On The Road  No questions? Then you get to drive.

On The Road  Parking Lots are the most dangerous places to drive…use extreme caution when departing the DMV!

On The Road During the DPE  Keep your eyes moving  Drive with Both Hands on the Wheel  Accelerate and brake smoothly…use the 16 th of an inch rule: Press the Gas/Brake pedals a 16 th of an inch at a time until the car does what you want it to do Press the Gas/Brake pedals a 16 th of an inch at a time until the car does what you want it to do Try to avoid quick starts or hard stops Try to avoid quick starts or hard stops

On The Road  Make a Complete Stop at all Stop Signs.  Your stop should last a minimum of 2 seconds…S-T-O-P

On The Road  Remember…This is a Performance Evaluation  LOOK at Everything…What you DO is more important than what you know at this point.  Do not fail to check your Blind Spot because you “know” nothing is there…You must DEMONSTRATE that you know by LOOKING!

On The Road  Do Your Traffic Checks…  Use the S-T-O-P method at Stop Signs or Signal Lights  In the Real World, YOU! are the only one who can Protect you on the road…so LOOK at stuff

On The Road  DRIVE LIKE YOU MEAN IT!  Do not be overly cautious  You must Demonstrate that you can drive safely with everyone else  The Examiner is not looking for perfection…  Remember…it will take you 5 years of experience to drive with the same degree of stupidity as other drivers

On The Road  “S.M.O.G”  Every Direction Change:  S ignal your intentions  Check your M irrors  Glance O ver your Shoulder  G o When Safe

On The Road: Backing  When told to park along the curb:  S.M.O.G  Angle the car to the curb at about a 30 degree angle  Use a fix point on the car (windshield wiper or center of hood) to position the car along the curb  Get the car as straight as possible, as quickly as possible  Stop the car, place in park, set the e- brake and release your signal light  With BOTH hands on the wheel, and your foot on the brake, wait for the next instruction

On The Road: Backing  When told to back:  Find a fixed point on the rear deck (center brake light/speaker) like the edge as shown.  Line up the edge or other fixed point with the curb.  Follow the curb with your fixed point until the examiner says stop.  You may look into the passenger side mirror to help…but do not stare at it!!! (Less than.5 sec.)

On The Road TURNS Make turns smoothly and finish in the correct lane Follow this rule: Right turn-right lane Left turn-left lane Speed for turns should not exceed 12-15 MPH

On The Road LANE CHANGES S.M.O.G all lane changes Do Not Slow for Lane Changes (This is really the Least Safe Thing to Do) Signal, Mirrors, Look Over the correct shoulder, Go when safe

On The Road FINAL THOUGHTS This is a Performance Evaluation! What you DO is more important than what you know, so do what is right! Be a STAR and Perform well enough to win an OSCAR!!!

On The Road GOOD LUCK!! Produced by Bob Hanrahan Senior Instructor Direct: 951-294-7682 mrbob4u@comcast.net
