American Literature Week 8 Outlining our Term Papers

Am. Lit: DO NOW 3/3/14  How would you describe Prufrock’s character? What kind of personality does he have? And what makes you say that?

Success Today Means 3/3/14  You incorporate all the information you gathered Friday as you finish designing and decorating your Prufrock social media profile poster.  The poster is due at the bell unless I tell you personally otherwise. Those working will be granted additional time. Those wasting time, will get no more. Remember this poster is a PROJECT GRADE (40% of your grade category)  BRING ALL YOUR RESEARCH MATERIALS TOMORROW (including any old handouts or notes you have taken, but especially your NOTECARDS/SOURCECARDS

Am Lit DO NOW: 3/4/14  Look through your notecards. What are some of your most common “hashtags”?  Today we are learning how to sort our cards into piles and turning those piles into an outline. ELITE THINKERS: How do you think the “hashtags” will fit into the outline? (Think back to the outline handout we used to take notes about Modernism)

Notecard: If you are lucky, your hashtags will become your section headings. But if you have broad hashtags like “Benefits” or “Pros,” those hashtags will probably need to be split up into smaller groups.

MLA Research Outline We will turn our piles into section heading. And eventually put them in an outline form. Here is the first rough draft of an outline. We add more parts as we work through our notecards

Success Today Means 3/4  You can stop researching and start organizing by sorting your notecards into piles and turning the hashtags of those piles into the headings on your basic first outline.  Use the sample outline handout to see how some topics can be “”chunked” down. Notice they all use a little different outline style. Those little details are not important right now.

Basic Outline Structure THESIS/Research Question:_______________________ I.Topic/Reason/Section (could be based on the hashtag) II.Main Topic/Reason/Section III.Main Topic/Reason/Section IV.Main Topic/Reason/Section V.Main Topic/Reason/Section

Am Lit DO NOW: 3/5/14  Predict: What do you expect to see for A, B, C? What types of details do you think A,B,C will be? (Think about what the hashtag needs to prove its claim) I.Scientific studies haven’t proved a link between use of cell phones and traffic accidents A. B C. II.Scientific studies haven’t proved a link between use of cell phones and traffic accidents A. Redelmeir and Tinshirani Study B. Most states do not keep records on accidents caused by driver distractions (3) C. Cain and Burris report that results pm cell phones and driving are inconclusive

Success Today Means 3/5  You revise your heading to make them more detailed or specific (like the heading in the DO NOW).  You start to list the details that belong to each heading. In a similar fashion as the DO NOW OUTLINE REQUIREMENTS: Thesis Main Sections with evidence listed underneath headers. OUTLINE DUE FRIDAY TURN IN PRUFROCK POSTERS TO COFFEE TABLE. Staple Rubric to poster. Name should be on backside.

Am Lit DO NOW: 3/6/14  Create a SMART goal for today. If you are behind, today is a great opportunity to get catch up. If you have been on track, you may get your outline done today.  Either way, students who share their SMART goal and can show me they met it at the end of the hour get Dipped for GRIT  HW: OUTLINE DUE TOMORROW!

Am Lit DO NOW: 3/7/14  Let’s see what you know/remember:  For MLA formatting,  How long should the margins be around the paper?  Font size/type?  What information goes in the Header section of the document?

Success Today Means 3/7  You create a properly formatted word document that you can use to start typing your paper following the requirements on your handout.  You submit this essay to the edmodo ASSIGNMENT tab. This means you actually upload a Word Document (like an attachment to an email)
