Friday! 9/16/2011 Plan for the day: ◦ Get your typed rough draft ◦ Your pink sheet ◦ 2 markers ◦ A pencil or a pen Remember: ◦ You need to fix the mistakes found in your rough draft for homework. ◦ You will bring a fresh typed draft MONDAY! ◦ Turnitin.com practice DUE!

Editing #2 This is very easy…if you have bothered to write your paper.

You need these things: Pen or pencil 2 different colored markers 2 small post its SILENCE If you do not have ATLEAST 3 pages written or 1 ½ typed you will work on your essay and edit for homework. ◦ This is your ONLY option for today. ◦ You will show me an edited draft at the beginning of class tomorrow.

MLA Format Write this down: Your Name Ms. Clendenin English I- (class period) 22 September 2011 This is important and necessary to your paper

MLA Format Paper has a creative title All margins are set at 1 inch 12 pt font Times New Roman

Intro. Read your first paragraph. Using your pen/ pencil underline: ◦ The characters ◦ The setting All of these things should be in your intro.

Body paragraphs Using your pen/ pencil number your body paragraphs ◦ Do your paragraphs “flow” into one another? ◦ Do they change when the scene or topics change? ◦ Is there a new paragraph when the speaker of dialogue changes?

Dialogue Read through your paper. Take a marker and highlight your dialogue. You should only have 4 to 5 sentences of dialogue. If you have more than 4-5 lines, pick the most important/ most powerful lines of dialogue to keep.

Conclusion Highlight the last sentence of your essay. ◦ Does it give your paper a sense of finality and closure? ◦ Is there a feeling of resolution?

Step 1 Highlight every sentence (Not lines!) in your essay using alternating colors. For example: If you use yellow for the first sentence, use orange for the second; alternating sentences following that pattern- yellow, orange, yellow, etc. This allows you to look for variation in your sentence lengths, as well as run-on sentences and fragments. If you notice that your sentences are mostly the same length, try combining some of them to create complex sentences. Fix any run-ons or fragments that you discover.

Step 2 Put brackets [ ] around the first word in every sentence. This shows you whether or not you ’ re beginning too many sentences the same way. Unless it ’ s for effect, try not to start several consecutive sentences the same way. If you discover that you ’ ve begun several sentences the same way, find ways to change some of them. Also check and make sure your sentences do not start with AND, BUT or BECAUSE.

Step 3 switch with someone or keep yours At the top of the page write “be verbs- your name” Circle all “Be Verbs” in your essay (am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been). “Be Verbs” are passive and can make your writing sound weak. As often as possible, use action verbs to make your writing more alive. Add up the total # of “Be Verbs” in your essay. Find a way to change 1/3 of them into action verbs. Again, this may mean re-wording some sentences.

Step 4 switch with someone or keep yours At the top of the page write “spelling- your name” Read the paper backwards Underline any words, that you think are misspelled, twice

Step 5 Read the paper backwards Look for commas Circle every comma that you find in the paper with a marker or pen. You need to make sure that your commas are serving their purpose.

Step 6 At the top of the page write - “2nd person-your name” 2nd- you, your, you’re. Read the paper backwards Put brackets [ ] around all 2 nd person pronouns.

Step 7 switch with someone else or keep yours At the top of the page write - “first person-your name” First-I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, ours. Read the paper backwards Put brackets [ ] around all first person words

Rough Draft 2/3: By Monday, this paper should be corrected, typed, double spaced, 12 pt font and ready for a 3 rd editing. (1 ½-2 pages) Not having your essay is NOT an option, you have 3 days to figure it out. No essay Monday will mean you make a PERSONAL phone call to your parent in my class.
