The first BIG essay A few reminders (don’t panic)

Structural reminders Introduction  As an opening invitation, establish the particular circumstances of the passage you are analyzing.  Avoid starting your paper in a “prompt dependent” fashion. Conclusion options  Respond personally to the text and/or to the message of the passage itself  Maybe answer this question: To what extent has your style analysis increased your appreciation of the work as a whole? To the speaker of the passage?

More structure… Body  Build your paper from weakest argument to strongest  Include the examples you are using to conduct the style analysis (place individual words in italics when discussing a pattern of diction)  Nothing magical about having 3 body paragraphs

Title page REMEMBER your title page is the passage itself  A clean copy  Header with your name, the due date of the paper, and your class period You do not need this for Friday, but you do for Tuesday when the final draft is due.

Draft reminders  A completed draft, from intro to conclusion is expected tomorrow.  Have your draft in Googledoc format (or Word).  You do not need to have it printed.

What are we doing with the draft?  Focused peer review—handout  Decide now who you’ll share your draft with. Class tomorrow  “B” lab  Share drafts via Googledoc  Follow handout to give solid feedback  Download draft as a Word Document  Print and sign  Return to writer  Keep your reviewed document

What to hand in… 1.Title page: follow earlier instructions 2.Final draft: Double spaced 3.Your annotated passage(s) 4.Your peer-reviewed draft
