DASHES NOTES AND PRACTICE Dashes, like commas, semicolons, colons, ellipses, and parentheses, indicate added emphasis, an interruption, or an abrupt change of thought. NOTE: Dashes subtly change the tone of the following sentences: Examples: You are the friend, the only friend, who offered to help me. You are the friend—the only friend—who offered to help me. NOTE: Words and phrases between dashes are not generally part of the subject. Example: Joe—and his trusty mutt—was always welcome.

We will do the first page (p.3) together. After that, please follow this pattern: 1.Silent read the entire story (or page-by-page, whichever you prefer). 2.Define the vocab words in the margins. 3.Read the prompts for the questions. 4.Re-read the sections of the story to answer those questions. 5.Be sure to complete all parts of the questions. Once you have finished the “close read” of this story, you will then DRAFT an answer to the short response question on page 8. Complete your DRAFT on the RACES graphic organizer worksheet once you are finished with the story. After completing the RACES graphic organizer, REVISE and then RE-WRITE that response in your workbook on page 8. Take pictures of each page in the close reader when you are finished and submit it to Canvas Take pictures of RACES graphic organizer when you are finished and submit it to Canvas My.hrw.com – online book
