AIMS’99 Workshop AIMS’99 ATM-IP-Multimedia Services for the next Millennium Heinz Brüggemann Project Supervisor brueggemann@eurescom.de

AIMS’99 Workshop Many Internet services have been reaching a critical mass –the value of service and network is increasing exponentially –demand for higher transmission rates will increase even faster (classical predictions have become extremely difficult) –classical media categories are blurring (Broadcast  Webcast; Enhanced TV, E-books, TV  PC) –Multimedia is the kernel for new value-added services and Internet will be the omnipresent infrastructure for them –In Internet business “Months count as Years” Increasing user demands for: –high bandwidth and scalable services –acceptable usability and functionality of services –assured (guaranteed) end-to-end service quality Burning Issues (1)

AIMS’99 Workshop Burning Issues (2) We have ATM, but is it still the most appropriate network technology? –Is it mainly interesting for backbone providers (IP-transport)? –Are there advantages for XDSL, for IP-Multicast? What are the perspectives of alternative high-speed networks? –Are optical techniques (i.e. IP over WDM) better suited? –How mature are they, how long will it take until they become common technology? How to satisfy requirements on QoS and scalability? –Do we need a common IP management system? Where to invest money and effort?

AIMS’99 Workshop Session 1:High speed transport networks for IP –Provide a picture on the suitability of ATM to carry IP –Advancements and suitability of WDM for IP? –IP-multicast technologies Session 2: IP network technology: –IP switching for multimedia applications –Tools and protocols for Quality management/ assurance (e.g. IPv6) –charging for IP services The scope of AIMS’99 (1)

AIMS’99 Workshop Session 3: IP services –Requirements for the provision of usable and acceptable multimedia services? –How can applications control QoS? –Status and quality aspects of telephony, interactive (real- time) multimedia services over IP –IP mobility by using Network Computing Services, IP- roaming Session 4: Management of IP –The Panel “Do we need IP management - How can be realised?” The scope of AIMS’99 (2)
