2 G OAL VS. O BJECTIVES Goal: What do we want to accomplish? Objectives: How will we reach our goal? Goal is bigger idea Objectives are smaller, more specific

3 O BJECTIVES What will we be doing? In what timeframe? Practical and achievable Avoid vague words (e.g., “promote” or “encourage”)

4 O BJECTIVES M UST B E M EASUREABLE Incorporate method for measuring progress or results If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it How much? How many? How often? Observable or trackable results

5 O BJECTIVES N EED T IMEFRAME Specify a time period Start date, finish date and/or deadline Create timeline with interim target dates

6 A LSO C ONSIDER To be successful, objectives need to be Relevant Agreed to Understandable Reachable Assignable Visible

7 E XAMPLE O BJECTIVES Identify an energy policy committee composed of 5 members, by September 30, 2011 Identify training needs of current staff and write a training plan by June 1, 2011
