7 From the foregoing, even though UNIBEN, UNILORIN, UNIZIK, UNILAG and UNN are the top 5 schools with the highest Applicants. Based on Performance in the UTME; UNILAG, OAU, UNN, UNIZIK and UI are the top performing schools. Coincidentally, these are the most respected Universities in Nigeria and also regarded as the Top 5 UNILAG OAU UNN UNIZIK UI

8 From common knowledge, most of these schools only consider applicants who scored at least 200 in UTME for Post-UME. As a result the % of those who scored 200 and above are potentially at advantage for a possible slot in their chosen institutions. For instance; 15,207 applicants qualifies for UNILAG Post-UME, 12,042 for OAU, 13,648 for UNN and 14,494 for UNIZIK. 23 According to the Minister of Education, 520,000 admission spaces are available for over 1.7million candidates for UTME 2013. Only (189,1612) 10.90% of these candidates achieved at least a score of 200; therefore, the problem is not that of carrying capacity of our tertiary institutions but the amount of unprepared and unqualified applicants we have. Even if the capacity of our institutions are increased, are they going to be occupied by unqualified applicants? Clearly, urgent interventions are required by Parents, Governments and other concerned individuals to increase the knowledge capacity of future applicants starting with those presently in secondary schools.

24 Our problem is not the Carrying Capacity of our Institutions, it is the Intellectual Capacity of our Applicants!
